Rachel Roszi (Drumer) Rubin was born in Romania in 1931. Her parents were Isaac and Raisie (Glazer) Drumer. She had two brothers and two sisters: Hendel (who died in Bergen-Belsen just after the liberation); Yechiel (a forced laborer who escaped to the Soviet Union); Sara Aigie (who died in Bergen-Belsen after the liberation); and Yaakov (murdered in Auschwitz). Rachel was together with her family in the Barbesti Ghetto from which they were deported to Auschwitz in 1944. Afterwards the three sisters Hendel, Sara and Rachel were taken to the Hunsfeld labor camp in Breslau. Rachel worked in an aircraft parts factory. The sisters were taken on a death march from Hunsfeld to Bergen-Belsen. Rachel was the only one of the sisters who survived.<\/p>\n
She was transferred to Sweden from Bergen-Belsen along with other children. She was hospitalized for a short time, and then she started attending school. She lived with a Protestant family in Orebro and tried to locate her relatives through the Red Cross. She found her uncle who lived in Eretz Israel. He made arrangements to remove her from the foster home and transfer her to the Jewish dormitory in Sjoberga. She remained in Sweden until 1947, and then travelled to Marseilles. On 23 March 1948 she attempted to make illegal aliya to Eretz Israel. She was deported to Cypress where she remained for three months.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
